The Top 10 Words Today's Couples Are Using to Describe Their Wedding Style

Now that we've released The Knot Real Weddings Study 2018 results, we thought we'd take a moment to dig a little deeper into data. One of our favorite questions from the study is the part of the survey where we ask couples to tell us the words and descriptions they used to articulate their wedding day style and theme. Because we've been tracking these stats for more than a decade, we can also take the current data and compare it to those of years past -- giving us a very healthy understanding of how attitudes are shifting.

Here, the top 10 words couples used to describe their weddings in 2018 (from The Knot Real Weddings Study 2018):

1. Romantic (29%)

Up vs 25% in 2014

2. Fun (25%)

Flat vs. 24% in 2014

3. Down to Earth (23%)

Up vs. 19% in 2014

4. Elegant (22%)

Up vs. 21% in 2014

5. Classic (22%)

Down vs. 23% in 2014

6. Do-It-Yourself (18%)

Down vs. 24% in 2014

7. Practical (16%)

Up vs. 15% in 2014

8. Traditional (16%)

Down vs. 18% in 2014

9. Creative (14%)

Down vs. 17% in 2014

10. Casual (14%)

Up vs. 12% in 2014

We promise not to just send you off with a bunch of numbers. So instead, let's look at it this way:

Top 3 Words on the Decline

1. Do-It-Yourself (down 6 percentage points since 2014)

2. Vintage (down 5 percentage points since 2014)

3. Creative (down 4 percentage points since 2014)

In contrast, words like fun, elegant, romantic, practical, and down-to-earth have stayed steady or increased over the past few years.

In other words, couples are still looking for romantic and elegant weddings (and they're still up for spending more on their guests than ever before). But if you're going to be successful, you also want to make sure your approach is not too stuffy or traditional and rather take a more down-to-earth, practical, fun approach.

So ask yourself: Does everything you do -- from the photos and captions you publish on social media to your bio and website and storefront on The Knot -- look and feel approachable and fun?

We challenge you to take a look at your online presence and do an audit. Little changes like these can make a big difference.
